Keijen van Tooren
Performer
Keijen van Tooren (23) is a young filmmaker from Antwerp. From a young age, he
was already very interested in art and film. After obtaining his high school diploma at
De!Kuntshumaniora, he continued on the path of visual arts by following a course in
Scenography and Costume Design at the Maastricht Theatre Academy. After a year
he realized that his heart lay more in the audiovisual field of the arts, and he decided
to switch gears and move to Brussels where he studied filmmaking at Luca School of
Arts. There he truly found his voice; during the three-year study, he made a series of
small, intimate films exploring themes of sexuality, loneliness, and growing up in a
digitally fractured world. His films are often a blend of narrative-, documentary- and
found footage film, centering around young people and taking inspiration from his
own life; his films becoming tools to grapple with his fears and desires and helping
him make sense of the world around him. After this, he decided to lay practical
filmmaking aside for a bit and is now delving into the theoretical side of cinema by
doing a master's Film and Visual Culture at the University of Antwerp.
Besides his love for film, he also has a great interest in theatre, here Rebels Arts
Platform ManOverboord is the perfect playground for him to explore all the wild and
crazy sides of physical performance, but also helps him to find softness and stillness
by working in a group of young makers that are very close to him. 'Repeat.' is his first
big performance where he finds the edges of where his body can take him, but all the
while tries to keep a kind of joyfullness as the point of focus. This piece is quest for
him to unravel the mysteries of dancing bodies.
